About Gord Aker, MCC

I am an engineer by education and background.  This often takes people a bit by surprise as being a professional coach isn't necessarily something they associate with the technical profession of engineering.  As always, there is a story here.

My university education includes both Bachelor and Master of Engineering degrees.  After graduation, I worked in engineering research before joining TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. which has since become TC Energy.  At TC Energy I did technical work for eight years before moving to the field organization in my first formal leadership capacity.  After literally two weeks in that position, I knew something had to change...and that something was me.

It became very clear to me in my first leadership role that the eight people reporting in to me were far more knowledgeable and expert in their fields than I could ever hope to be.  It also became clear to me that my engineering approach was not going to be very helpful in my new role as a leader and so, I made a difficult but conscious choice.  That choice was to forsake my technical background and focus instead on who I wanted to become as a leader.

Fast forward ten years and four additional leadership roles of increasing responsibility and I made yet another change. This time it was to leave the corporate world and to focus on leadership development. A friend of mine introduced me to coaching and after my first training session with the Coaches Training Institute (CTI) I was blown away at the impact that this approach could have in helping people achieve their dreams and aspirations.  I completed the training program and then the certification program and finally applied for and was awarded my first International Coaching Federation (ICF) credential.

I went back to industry after five years of entrepreneurship to re-test my own leadership taking on a role firstly as the President of a Registered Charity and then subsequently, a General Manager position with Pennwest Exploration, (now Obsidian Energy).  The oil price collapse in 2015 saw me back doing leadership development work again full time which continues to this day.

As for my on-going personal leadership journey, since 2019, I have been the Chair of the Board of The Military Museums Foundation which has not only allowed me to give back to the community but has also challenged me to continue to grow and develop my leadership capabilities.

I include some of the organizations I have the privilege of working with below, but of course this does not include the hundreds of individual clients I have worked with over the years.

On the personal side, I live in Calgary with my wife of 35+ years and have two grown children.
